The Gojira Right-Hand Bell Pattern
Thanks Mario Duplantier š«”
This drumming system is inspired by LāEnfant Sauvage at 0ā26ā:
And hereās a 1-bar transcription of what weāre looking into:
If youāve read my previous articles, you know where this is going. I built a set of rules that allow for the same feel over multiple bars. From article to article, those set of rules are more and more complex. If I were you, Iād go straight to the practice sheets, but if you still want the deets, here it is:
4/4Ā System
Core Musical Structure
- 16Ā notes perĀ barĀ (16thĀ notes inĀ 4/4)
- EachĀ position can be:Ā ride bell, ghosted snare, orĀ accented snare
- Beat 3 must alwaysĀ beĀ an accentedĀ snare
- No other positionĀ can haveĀ anĀ accentedĀ snare
Consecutive NoteĀ Limits
- Maximum 2 consecutive rideĀ bells
- MaximumĀ 5Ā consecutive snaresĀ (ghostedĀ or accented)
- Bar boundary constraint: No more than 2 consecutive ride bells betweenĀ bar end and start
if you ever want to play the exercices from top to bottom like the beast you are šŖ
MinimumĀ ContentĀ Requirements
- At leastĀ 3 rideĀ bells per bar
- At leastĀ 2 ghosted snares per bar
- Must have at least 2 consecutiveĀ ride bell pairs
- Must have atĀ leastĀ 1Ā single ride bellĀ (not in aĀ pair)
- More snareĀ hitsĀ thanĀ ride bell hitsĀ (snare count > rideĀ bell count)
PositionalĀ Constraints
- If beat 3 accent is preceded byĀ 2+ consecutive ghostedĀ snares, theĀ second 16th ofĀ beat 3 cannot be a ride bell
- If beat 2 has a ride bell on the fourthĀ 16th,Ā beat 3Ā cannot have aĀ snare onĀ the secondĀ 16th
- If a ride bell is followed by 3+ consecutive snares, theĀ ride bell mustĀ be on theĀ first orĀ third 16th ofĀ aĀ beat
- If a bar ends with 2 consecutive rideĀ bells, the first 16th of theĀ next bar cannotĀ beĀ a ride bell
Bass DrumĀ Placement
- All single rideĀ bells get bassĀ drumĀ hits. For pairsĀ of consecutive ride bells: Only the first ride bell ofĀ the first pairĀ gets a bassĀ drum hit
- MinimumĀ 2 bass drum hits perĀ bar
12/8 System
Consecutive Note Limits
- Maximum 2 consecutive rideĀ bells
- MaximumĀ 4Ā consecutiveĀ snaresĀ (ghosted orĀ accented)Ā
relaxed fromĀ 5
- Bar boundary constraint: No more than 2 consecutive ride bellsĀ betweenĀ bar end andĀ start
Minimum Content Requirements
- At leastĀ 2Ā rideĀ bells per barĀ
relaxedĀ from 3

relaxed fromĀ 2
- Must have atĀ least 1Ā single ride bellĀ (not in aĀ pair)
- Snare hits must be at least equal toĀ rideĀ bell hitsĀ
relaxed from "more than"
Positional Constraints
- If beat 3 accent is preceded byĀ 2+ consecutive ghosted snares, theĀ second 8th ofĀ beat 3 cannot be a ride bell
- If beatĀ 2 has a rideĀ bellĀ on the fourth 8th,Ā beat 3Ā cannot have aĀ snareĀ on the secondĀ 8th
- If a rideĀ bell is followed by 3+ consecutive snares, the ride bell mustĀ be on theĀ first orĀ third 8th ofĀ aĀ beat
- If a bar ends with 2 consecutive rideĀ bells,Ā the first 8th of theĀ next bar cannotĀ beĀ a ride bell
Bass DrumĀ Placement
- All singleĀ ride bells get bassĀ drumĀ hits. For pairsĀ of consecutive ride bells: OnlyĀ the first ride bell of the first pair gets a bass drum hit
- MinimumĀ 2 bass drum hits perĀ bar
Have fun with sticking
Before letting you work with these insane patterns. Make sure you know how to play 2 consecutive notes on the snare drum, with the first one being a ghost note and the second a huge rimshot. For longer streaks on the snare drum, youāll have to play the ghost notes with both hands. The system is playable, but youāll have to think of the sticking a few times to make sure youāre not breaking your wrists š.
